Living in The Moment!

A problem we often face is always looking towards the future and continuously reliving the past. We’re always waiting for the next thing, “What if (this) happens?”, “I am so anxious and stressed about…”, “In the future I want…”, “I’ll be happy when…”. Mixed with this sense of the past- reliving thoughts and experiences, both good and bad.

We have this difficulty to be thankful for what we have today. In this moment, in this present, in the Now. Here is something you have probably heard of before, but maybe never really thought about. All you have is now. The moment you are living in right now, is it. Your life is here. Look around you wherever you are at and really look. What do you see? Your loved one(s) playing games, watching T.V., making meals? Maybe you’re outside; look at the plants, trees, sky, flowers… just breath in the sense of life.

We always are living for the next thing that is coming, so we forget to be thankful for what we have in this moment. How can you do this?

  1. Be still. Try this for 1 minute, maybe 2. Stop whatever you are doing now and look around you, don’t move, just relax and breathe. Allow the stress that you hold constantly to melt away, just for a few moments. This will allow you to comprehend the Now. Maybe you’ll feel it, that small high of happiness you get when you are living now. That feeling is always there, waiting.

  2. Be thankful. Whether it’s for your health, that you woke up this morning. Maybe it’s having a loved one with you right now, or having absolute solace for the first time in a while. For the sun outside, food in your fridge, gas in your car and roof over your head. We tend to take all of these things for granted. Acknowledge these things, be purposefully thankful for them.

  3. Meditate. Close your eyes and focus on your breath. Feel your body, how is it feeling? Being able to feel your body in a moment and not judge it helps to bring you to the present. Find your breath and concentrate on the in and out. Thoughts may come, but let them go, like a river constantly moving downstream.

  4. Read a book. Or, listen to one. I feel this is something we often forget about. Reading a book puts us in the absolute now. Have you ever read a book or article, and got lost within it? Time seemed to stand still? Your thoughts just evaporated and you find yourself consumed. This is another way to be living in the moment. Find a book to read or listen to, and if you need suggestions- feel free to ask any of us!

Right now we have time to focus on our present, take that time and be thankful for it. You have so much right now, sometimes you just need to have a moment to realize what has been in front of you all long. Hug your loved ones, tell them why you love them. Make a homemade dinner, read a book, meditate and breath. For right now is all you have.

With love,

Coach Madison
