It feels just like yesterday when I fell in love with the deadlift. I can’t remember the day or the time but I do remember that feeling of conquering my heaviest lift. In my head I felt like I was deadlifting my dad's Cadillac, and I’m talking about an ‘86 Cadillac Eldorado with cream leather seats and white walls on the tires. In reality it was probably more like my bodyweight, but the weight didn’t matter, it was that feeling of lifting the impossible. That's what “Falling in Love with the Deadlift is all about” to me.
Deadlifting and Dating
Like the feeling you have before your first date with someone, approaching a heavy deadlift can be intimidating. Whether it’s not knowing which shirt to wear or what you should talk about on the date. Or in the deadlift, whether it’s where I put my hands or my feet. Where do I look? How do I breathe? In the end you always figure out what works best for you and all of the small worries you had eventually go away and you have some of the best experiences of your life.
Change things up
One of the best parts about the deadlift is that there are so many different variations. As the methodology says ”Constantly Varied”! Whether it be Sumo, Romanian, Clean, Snatch, Dumbbell, Kettlebell; when you find your favorite it's like meeting the love of your “weightlifting life”. This is a lift that lends itself to variety so branch out and try new things. Having access to all of these options is one reason I fell in love with the deadlift.

Invest in Your Deadlift
Another reason I fell in love with the deadlift is the fact that investing time into the fundamentals your deadlift will just make you stronger. Making those small time investments weekly in your deadlift will pay dividends in more ways than one. Not just physical applications in everyday life like picking up a heavy bag of pet food or gardening soil but mentally as well, similar to when you are working on a huge project at work and the deadline is coming up and you have to mentally focus on the task at hand and dig deep and “lift the bar”. Sometimes that bar may be a laptop that seemingly weighs 1000 .lbs because of the work that needs to be done. Once you’ve invested the time in getting stronger you know that you're capable of anything.
It may not be love at first sight but once you’ve fallen in love with the deadlift it will be a hard bond to break.
